Custom Orthotics in Glendale
Your feet are the foundation everything else sits on. When they’re not doing their job well, your knees, hips, and lower back end up absorbing the difference — often for years before anyone thinks to look down.
Why Foot Mechanics Affect Your Back
Every step sends force up through your body. If your arch collapses inward as you land, your shin rotates with it, which changes how your kneecap tracks, which tilts your pelvis slightly, which the muscles in your lower back then work to correct.
None of that is dramatic on a single step. But you take thousands of them a day, and a small mechanical fault repeated that often compounds. It’s why some knee and back pain doesn’t resolve until someone looks at what’s happening at the ground.

Your First Session
1. Gait assessment
We watch how you actually walk, not just how your foot looks standing still.
2. Digital scan
Both feet are scanned. They’re rarely identical, and the orthotics shouldn’t be either.
3. Manufactured
We then have the orthotics custom built to your specifications.
4. Fitting
Fitted at a follow-up visit, then adjusted as you break them in.
Custom vs. Store-Bought
Store-bought inserts add cushioning based on your shoe size. Custom orthotics correct a specific mechanical problem based on how you move.
That distinction matters: if your issue is just a bit of cushioning, an insert may be all you need, and we’ll tell you that. If your arch is collapsing or your gait is loading one side unevenly, a generic insert won’t address it regardless of how comfortable it feels initially.

Frequently Asked Questions
Drugstore inserts are made in generic sizes and mainly add cushioning. Custom orthotics are made from a scan of your specific feet, informed by an assessment of how you actually walk, and are built to correct a particular mechanical issue.
The practical difference: an insert makes a shoe more comfortable, while an orthotic changes how force moves through your foot and up your leg. If cushioning is all you need, an insert is a reasonable place to start — we’ll tell you if that’s the case.
Coverage varies widely by plan. Some cover custom orthotics with documented medical necessity; many don’t cover them at all. FSA and HSA funds can typically be used. Call (818) 549-1300 and we’ll check your specific plan before you commit.
There’s usually a break-in period. Orthotics change how you’ve been walking, and your feet and legs need time to adapt — most people are advised to wear them for a few hours a day at first and build up.
Some initial awkwardness is expected. Ongoing pain isn’t, and it usually means an adjustment is needed. That’s what the follow-up visit is for.
It depends on your weight, activity level, and how much you’re on your feet — someone standing for twelve-hour shifts will wear through them faster than someone at a desk. They’re not permanent, and we’ll let you know what to watch for as they wear.
Not necessarily. Orthotics need a shoe with enough depth and a removable insole — athletic shoes and most work shoes are fine, while dress shoes, flats, and sandals often aren’t. Bring the shoes you wear most to your fitting so we can check.

Disclaimer
Tell us before your session if you: are pregnant or may be, are in or recently completed cancer treatment, have a blood clot/clotting disorder or take blood thinners, have a recent injury/surgery/fracture, have a skin condition/rash/infection at the treatment site, or have uncontrolled high blood pressure. None of these rule out treatment—they change how we approach it.
Start With a Gait Assessment
We’ll assess how you move and tell you honestly whether orthotics would help. Not everyone needs them, and we’d rather say so than sell you a pair.
